Another Craigslist Scam in the Area

7/1/2014

Picture
We recently became aware of another Craigslist scam in the area. The scam is not a new one but we wanted to share it so that you can be better prepared if you find yourself in this situation. In this Craigslist scam, the buyer commits to buy the item the person has listed on Craigslist. The buyer then talks the seller into sending money for shipping, usually via Western Union. The buyer tells the seller that they will refund the money for shipping at the time the buyer pays the seller. We recommend using a service like PayPal to make transactions and never as a seller should you pay for something the seller is going to pay for. If you as a seller are responsible for setting up shipping, have the buyer pay the shipping up front. Scammers have become sophisticated enough that they can make their phone number appear as a legitimate business located at a legitimate address when in fact they are located on the other side of the planet. They can send and receive emails that look official from company's such as PayPal and Craigslist. Remember, if you feel uneasy about an online transaction, back out.
